For many years now, my first stop when looking for help on a passage of Scripture has been The Bible Knowledge Commentary, edited by John Walvoord and Roy Zuck. Originally available in two hardback volumes, they are now published as eight paperback volumes. If you can get the hardcovers, go for that. It is also available in electronic format from multiple publishers, including Olive Tree and Logos.
It is based on the NIV, but works well with any Bible translation. It refers to the original languages where necessary but doesn’t require knowledge of them. It provides useful outlines of each book and brief comment on every passage of Scripture. All of the contributors were professors at Dallas Theological Seminary at the time of publication, and is written from a conservative, evangelical, dispensational viewpoint. I highly recommend these volumes.
